FLORES SILENCES JACKALS DESPITE EFFORTS BY CLARK AND NEWTON

Brockton, MA – Kevin Clark hit his third home run of the season and Jordan Newton went 3-for-4 with a double, but Brockton Rox starter Freddy Flores held the New Jersey Jackals in check over seven innings as the Rox defeated New Jersey 8-1 on Saturday evening at Campanelli Stadium. With the win, the Rox have now won 10 of their last 11 contests while the Jackals have dropped eight of their last 10.

The only blunder on Flores’ resume was Clark’s leadoff homer in the top of the sixth, a towering shot down the right field line, as the Brockton hurler earned the win to become the first Can-Am League pitcher to go 4-0 this season. Flores allowed one run on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts in seven innings of work in the outing, which equaled his longest of the season.

After the Rox plated two runs in the second on a sacrifice fly off the bat of catcher Chris Grossman and an RBI single by shortstop Dominic Ramos to take a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, Brockton tallied five runs against Jackals’ starter Dan Griffin to gain a commanding 7-0 advantage with third baseman Phillip Cuadrado’s two-run triple to center serving as the big blast in the inning.

Griffin (2-1) took his first loss of the season after yielding seven runs on eight hits over four innings. Griffin walked two batters, hit three more, and struck out three. Right-hander Edward Rodriguez surrendered the Rox’ final tally in the sixth inning when right fielder Keith Brachold tripled before scoring on Cuadrado ground out before rookie Luis Fernandez closed out the game with two scoreless frames for New Jersey.

In the losing effort, shortstop Mike DeJesus went 2-for-4 while third baseman Abraham Nunez added his fifth double of the season in the seventh inning. For Brockton, Cuadrado had two hits in four at-bats while Ramos, who entered the contest just 1-for-21 against New Jersey this season, collected three hits.

The Jackals (12-16) and Rox (17-10) conclude their four-game series on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. at Campanelli Stadium when New Jersey sends right-hander Nick Asselin (1-4, 6.67 ERA) to the mound against Brockton righty Wayne Lundgren (3-1, 3.89 ERA).
